George Raab
Wisconsin-born artist, George Raab, was the second curator of the Layton Art Gallery, serving from 1902 to 1922. He worked closely with Frederick Layton and traveled with him to Europe on collecting trips. Under Layton’s influence, Raab focused on collecting works by Victorian artists for the gallery. A progressive thinker, he also worked closely with the Milwaukee Art Institute to help support and show local artists in other venues. Raab himself produced figurative still-life paintings such as this work, as well as abstract linoleum and woodblock prints later in his career.
