Side Chair Rappahannock River Basin, Virginia, 1760-1775 Cherry Long-term loan from William Bradshaw Beverley Catalog no. 18 While English artisans played a large role in the development of furniture design in the colonial Chesapeake, artisans from elsewhere in the British Isles also had an impact. Recent scholarship has uncovered a remarkable body of neat and plain wares that indicate production by Irish-trained artisans working in Tappahannock, Virginia, during the third quarter of the eighteenth century. Among the more obvious Irish details on this piece is the combination of a popular strapwork splat design and panelled feet. | ||
