Dining Table Eastern Maryland, 1740-1755 Black walnut Catalog no. 57 Turned columnar legs are frequently encountered on early Chesapeake tables, but they rarely appear on New England examples. Such legs were used in several shops in southern Maryland, where this table was found. While the turned gateleg base parallels those made about 1700, the original rectangular top and rule-joined leaves suggest that the table was produced slightly later. Joiners working in rural districts like southern Maryland often retained earlier decorative and structural details long after they had ceased to be fashionable in more urban areas. | ||
