Chest King William County, Virginia, ca. 1800 Yellow pine Gift of the Burlington-Gwathmey Memorial Foundation This simple, unpainted, six-board chest descended through the Gwathmey family at Burlington plantation in Tidewater Virginia. Probably made by a carpenter on the estate, the chest was likely first used for storage in the main house. By the mid-twentieth century, the piece was well worn and had lost one of its front feet. The chest was discovered in 1988 in an abandoned two-room tenant farmer's house on the Burlington grounds. |
