Professional enamellers in London, many of them Dutch or German, specialized in adding hand-painted decoration to finished pottery and glass. The vessels shown here are a mix of English stoneware and imported Chinese porcelain wares, all adorned with colorful Chinoiserie enamelling. Most include the image of the long-necked "hoho" bird, a mythological animal derived from the Japanese phoenix, and exuberant flora similar to the decoration chased into silver, embroidered in silk, and varnished on japanned furniture.
