Rocking chaise
Made by Michael Hurwitz
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1988
Mahogany, oil paint
On loan from Patricia Conway and Roger Milgrim
In 1988, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston commissioned studio furniture-makers to design pieces inspired by historic objects in the museum collection. Michael Hurwitz adapted the sweeping curves of Graggs Elastic Chair to create this rocking chaise. Instead of bending pieces of hickory like Gragg, he glued together thin strips of mahogany and mounted the large laminated curve on a base inspired by Japanese architecture. The entire chair was painted to evoke Graggs color schemes.=
