Using time-honored methods if basket weaving—one of the oldest craft traditions in the West—Nathalie Miebach fashions a novel form of new materiality that builds on her interest in the earth sciences and meteorology. With Warm Winter, Miebach gives form to scientific data that charts changes in the meteorlogical landscape. The sculpture accurately depicts local, regional, and historical data from a two-month period between December 2006 and January 2007 and, in the process, raises questions about the divide between art and science. A color-coded key on the wall provides some indication as to how this dynamic work took shape.
