In 1984, Gord Peteran was five years out of his art school training at the Ontario College of Art. While there, he studied both art and cabinetmaking, following a path begun as a teenager when he worked in a furniture restoration shop. The first piece of furniture he ever sold—making him, by definition but perhaps unexpectedly, a professional furniture maker—was this simple chest of drawers, surmounted by an exact duplicate of itself in exactly one-quarter scale. When stacked one atop the other, the two objects create a curious perspectival effect, as if a single chest were both close at hand and far off in the distance.
