Turning, a craft discipline that involves creating objects on the lathe, usually from wood, has a unique place in Peteran’s work. He does not consider himself a turner in any way. Yet, Untitled So Far, a turned artifact, is among his most affecting works. The piece was conceived during a residency program in Canada, where another artist turned a simple spindle shape on the lathe and then discarded it. Peteran plucked the fragment from the woodpile, wrapped it in a sheath of red leather, and carefully stitched it up. This transformation from a functional turning into an art object made it somewhat mysterious: the red leather cover seems to withhold an inner secret.
