The bright red teapot seen here boasts organic curves and an unconventional handle that was on the cutting edge of ceramic designs in the Modernist style. On the other hand, the white jug is a close replica of nineteenth-century antiques that appealed to more traditional tastes. The stark difference between these pieces illustrates Thorley’s great versatility. He often designed modern and traditional wares at the same time. Similarly, the fact that this teapot and jug were produced by the same company suggests an American market that embraced the new alongside the old.
