This Mohawk leader, otherwise known as Theyanoguin or Hendrick Peters (1660-1735), lived at the castle of the Mohawk called Ganajohore (either present-day Danube in Herkimer County or Canajoharie in Montgomery County) and participated in early diplomacy with the Albany Dutch, the English, and the French in Canada. He was one of four Native American leaders brought to London in 1710, when this image was made. The wampum belt was a diplomatic gift to Queen Anne. | |
