This bellarmine-type bottle was among several dozen German stoneware storage vessels recovered from the 1752 Dutch shipwreck Geldermalsen. At the time of its sinking in the East Indian Ocean, the Geldermalsen was bound for Europe carrying nearly 100,000 pieces of Chinese porcelain. These stoneware bottles appear to have been used as storage vessels for use by the ship’s crew.
