Figure 25  Mugs, Staffordshire, 1702– 1714. Manganese-mottled earthenware. H. (left) 5 3/4". The half-pint mug on the left shows a narrow, raised band around the rim with an underlying groove about 1/8 inch below. The double shoulder-bands and the unglazed foot-bands were formed by numerous wheel-turned grooves, and the flat, circular bases are unglazed. The handle’s lower junction is stamped with a crowned “AR” ale- measure mark. The same potter made both mugs, although the “AR” marks
are different.
