The sprigs of this pottle-capacity mug feature Punch Party B1 and stag-hunting elements elevated on crude pads. A fireback panel frames a portrait of Charles I. Type-impressed ownership reads “Robt; Paten / Alesbury / 1762.” The encircling photograph shows the handle terminal to have been twice pressed from the left. The whereabouts of this important mug are unknown, as it was deaccessioned by Colonial Williamsburg. Its equally important and left-hand parallel, fig. 1d (with detail in table i.7), was also deaccessioned, in 1977. |
