Thorley realized the importance of advertising, and his papers reveal many drawings and sketches for signs. Some incorporate his wife’s name—Edith—instead of his. Even though this sign could not have been made before 1950, it reflects, as do many of his later ceramics, his interest in the designs of his earlier life, from the 1920s and 1930s.
