George and Martha Washington danced here at his Birthnight Balls in 1797 and 1798. The celebratory balls continued to be held long after his death, until the Civil War. Reenactments of the ball were held in 1932, on the bicentennial of Washington’s birth, and sporadically until the bicentennial of the nation, when the ball once again became an annual event.
