Figure 20 Mourning pitcher fragment, England, ca. 1805. Creamware. Found at the site of Arell’s Tavern, this pitcher has the words “ADMIRAL LORD NELSON” on a wreath cartouche below the spout. On one side is a portrait of Nelson flanked by cherubs. The missing portion shows a plan of the Battle of the Nile beneath the portrait. On the reverse are more cherubs within a wreath border. Nelson died tragically at Trafalgar as his troops defeated Napoleon. |
