Object Lab 10.0

At the tenth anniversary of Object Lab, students Heather Burich, Katherine Grady, Elisabeth Graham, Sarah Gomez, Jennifer Lien, Molly Mapstone, Isabelle Seifert, Samuel Snodgrass and Carolina Velez explored the generative concept of wonder. For their final project, the students were divided into three groups and assigned a word: shadows, diaspora, or perfection. The assigned word guided their interpretation of Chipstone objects including a nineteenth-century temperance plate series, a firescreen, sampler and abolitionist sugar bowl, and an eighteenth-century agateware teapot. In this film by Jorin Hood, the students present their arguments in collaboration with mentors Dr. Ellery Foutch, Middlebury College Assistant Professor of American Studies, Dr. Ann Smart Martin, University of Wisconsin-Madison Professor of Art History, artist Dario Robleto, and Dr. Kantara Souffrant, Oberlin College Visiting Professor of the Arts of Africa and the Black Atlantic.
