Digital Vase, 2009
Cast and blown glass, latex, air pump, and motion sensor

Mark Zirpel crafts engaging kinetic installations, which often arouse a sense of wonder more common to the field of science or mechanics. In Digital Vase, Zirpel re-creates a familiar and amusing human gesture to bookend a work that seems to breathe in response to the viewer’s presence. On a more cerebral level, this technologically powered sculpture evokes thoughts on the nature of physicality and substance.
