Under the Bridge, Fortescue focuses on geography as an expression of his own dual sense of identity. The representations of water inlaid onto the lids of the twin cabinets and projected on the wall appear to be identical. But the actual bodies of water exist thousands of miles apart. One of the videos depicts water from under the Sydney Harbor Bridge in Austrailia, his homeland, while the other depicts water from under the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, the city where he currently lives. A sculptor originally trained as a furniture maker and designer, Fortescue creates work with close attention to process and materiality. The two finely crafted cabinets-on-tripods resemble historical cameras and the metallic mounts at the top of the legs are century-old pieces of hardware that were made in San Francisco.
